A cheap way to have privacy is to plant a hedge. Choose plants that will like your type of soil (acid or alkaline), aspect (sunny or shady) and climate. Callistemon suits a hot, Mediterranean climate. It makes an evergreen hedge which has red (bottlebrush) flowers in spring or autumn. It can be left to grow naturally with long swaying branches or be cut to form a hedge. As each young tree grows, the side branches join up with those of the other trees. Trimming the hedge about every six weeks develops its shape. About two months before flowering, leave the hedge to develop the flowers. Birds might be nesting in it at this time too.
